Extension activity: Andrew Keen: Digital Vertigo interview with Web Pro News
Andrew Keen is the author of a book called Digital Vertigo. In it he argues that web 2.0, far from enabling a more positive representation of us, is in actual fact reducing us to 'digital narcissists', suffering with excessive love of ourselves, who have become too preoccupied with broadcasting ourselves.
He argues that social media, or the 'social internet as he refers to it as, amplifies, perpetuates and exaggerates narcissism in all of us.
We have retreated from the act of reading, watching more traditional media such as film and television in favour of becoming pre-occupied with broadcasting ourselves and our lives online. This, he suggests, doesn't reflect well on us as individuals or as a species.
He is concerned that the collectivism and publicness of the modern world is resulting in us all losing something central and important in our lives. He argues that the more we self-promote online the more we become products ourselves, and he sees that as a real tragedy.
How do you feel about this? Ending your essay with a reference to Andrew Keen would pose some interesting questions, and offers an alternative view to both Buckingham and Gauntlett.

Teenage - Jon Savage
Writer Jon Savage's new documentary Teenage examines a period in history when there were two kinds of people - the old, and the young, and looks closely at how the word Teenage developed, both as a term and as a cultural marker. Here is the trailer and two interviews with the author.

Reading List for Collective Identity
Although books in Media tend to become obsolete quickly, given the nature of the subject, there are some very good books that won't go out of date and which we would recommend you dip into to develop your understanding of the Collective Identity unit. Below are the titles of the books, along with the library shelf-reference, for ease of finding in our college library. Each of these titles has more than one copy:
'Television Culture' by John Fiske 302.23.FIS
We will be focusing on John Fiske as one of our theorists. We look at his theory when exploring representations of teenagers found in television programmes.
'Making is Connecting' by David Gauntlett 302.23.GAU
This book is all about how we use the media to understand ourselves and to connect with other people who share similar ideas and beliefs as us. This book is useful when we move on to looking at web 2.0 and internet texts.
'Key Themes in Media Theory' by Dan Laughey 302.23.LAU
This is a general book that covers lots of the theories and ideas that the A2 unit focuses on. Easy to read.
'Understanding Representation' by Wendy Helsby 302.2301.UND
A good general book for developing your understanding of representation in the media in general;
'Media, Gender and Identity' by David Gauntlett 302.2308.GAU
This book explores identity in detail and is a good text for expanding your understanding of the key themes in the Collective Identity unit.
'OCR Media Studies for A2' by Julian McDougall 302.23.MCD
This is the companion guide to the syllabus that you are studying. It's a little outdated but has some good ideas for organising your revision and preparing for the exam. Definitely worth looking at.
